You’ve probably heard how empowering and transformational the road to your first handstand can be – all that’s left is to start practicing!

Or so you might have thought.. Until you starting googling handstands and became overwhelmed by the sheer amount of different handstand advice out there. Or until you had to kick up into a handstand on your own and realised there was a fear that needed to be dealt with. At least that’s some of the issues I encountered, when I first started practicing handstands.

This beginning of your handstand journey and making it a regular part of your life can be a challenge. There are lots of obstacles to overcome on the road to your first freestanding handstand such as fear, self-limiting believes, strength and mobility limitations, lack of body awareness, lack of motivation, and the list goes on. You can be beating yourself up for not practicing or trying to skip a few steps on the handstand journey when you do practice because you just want to do your first real handstand. NOW.

You will get there if you continue to show up and practice just a little bit a couple of times every week, I promise. And in the end when you learn to handstand you will have learnt so much more than just to handstand in the process of overcoming all the hurdles along the way. Practicing handstands is so worth it and so much fun when you have the right tools to guide you along.

Here are some thoughts and some struggles that might be bothering you:

  • I have no idea what I’m doing
  • How do I overcome my fear of going upside down?
  • I don’t know how to navigate all the different information out there
  • How to I find the time and motivation to practice?
  • Which drills should I focus on at my stage on the journey?
  • If I practice handstands alone I could injure myself
  • I’m not sure what to do to get there, I need a roadmap
